There’s a general unease that director George Ratliff plays with, using strategic shots to remind us that these people are unwilling participants, even making us look over our own shoulders. Their relationship isn’t exactly believable, with the chemistry between the two devoid of a spark. A writer has already published all the stories from his childhood with his now-deceased father, and is struggling to develop new best-selling material. Do you disagree? But don’t despair. Welcome Home has a melting pot of possibilities, preying on human fear, but much like Federico, it skulks when it should attack. Kristy Strouse is Editor in Chief of Film Inquiry, writer, podcaster, and all around film and TV fanatic. Bryan is instantly threatened by Federico’s good looks, and Federico uses this jealousy to ingratiate himself with the couple, manipulating them into turning against each other. "Welcome Home" is part of a long tradition of thrillers about devil figures who amplify tension in a couple's relationship, hoping to steal one half of the couple away, or simply torment (and maybe kill) both of them. (In-between showering, of course.) The otherwise appealing Ratajkowski is a bit vague in certain scenes, and she seems so sweet and loving that it's hard to square Cassie's demeanor with her indiscretion, even after the script has spelled it out for us. 5 – 1980: New Wave, Cinema City, Jackie Chan & John Woo, The History of Hong Kong Action Cinema Pt. With any thriller, filmmakers must realise that the audience are going to try and second guess what’s going to happen onscreen: it’s part of the reptilian side of how our brains are hardwired – so it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Federico is spying on the couple through hidden cameras in the villa early on. When they meet the friendly neighbor Federico (Riccardo Scamarcio) he seems harmless, helpful. He falls and Bryan hits him with a cane. Paul gives Bryan an arrogant, self-loathing, resentful edge that makes him into something more than a tortured boyfriend (and hints at why Cassie cheated); he's particularly good in scenes where Bryan takes a hard look at his own weaknesses. Humanity achieved space travel several decades earlier than you know, and now a private company called Kepler is launching the first-ever Cryoship, and launching the first ever off-planet settlement project. Cassie sees a video of Bryan and the two ladies having sex in the hotel. Bryan (Aaron Paul) and Cassie (Emily Ratajkowski) rent a beautiful, romantic villa in the Italian countryside using a home-sharing website called Welcome Home. I’m always up for building tension, but Welcome Home could have used more of it. The relationship between Bryan and Cassie could have taken a darker turn than it did, and we never really find out much of Frederico’s story. Bulldoze the borders. The character is the star as well as the writer-director of a melodrama he created, but there has to be something defective in a personality that needs to create melodrama in the first place. It’s also not much of a reveal later in the film that he’s been essentially living under the house instead of on another property. Cassie throws her phone at Bryan, it misses him and hits a mirror, revealing a hidden camera. However, the period to revel in is too little, too late. Suddenly, Eduardo turns and aims a gun at Bryan, accusing them of murder. It had a head start, so why did it still come short? What are his motives? Scamarcio has the trickiest role, and he doesn't disappoint.
