That you could shut people down with just a few simple comments; today we call that “slaying”. Wow. WORST BOOK EVER! After getting into trouble for carrying out some of the punishments she had thought of, Harriet decides to try to resume her friendship with Sport and Janie as if nothing ever happened. Ole Golly, Harriet's nanny, comes outside to scold her for playing in the mud, and says that she is going to take Harriet and Sport somewhere because now that they are eleven, it is time for them to see more of the world. In homeroom, Miss Elson leads them in the election of their class officer for the year, who controls much of the goings-on of the class, including writing down the names of those who are disorderly when the teacher leaves the room, and editing the Sixth Grade Page of the school paper. It's surprising how mean-spirited this book is. Harriet is a rebel, and it’s easy to believe that she’s a real person because she stays true to herself. I HATED Harriet! I wanted to be Harriet. I think it is a must read for every kid. She loves to write, and her goal is to one day become a novelist. Everything is written feverishly in her notebook, which Harriet hopes will be good practice for her future writing career. This pleases Harriet, who wants to be a spy so that she can know everything. I remember picking up this book before a summer vacation. Harriet was very close to Ole Golly and is devastated when she leaves for good. Harriet M. Welsh is right up there with Scout Finch and Francie Nolan as one of the all time great child heroines in literature. Harriet obviously comes from a wealthy family, and lives comfortably in Manhattan with many people to look after her and cater to her whim. Either she will have to apologize, or she will have to lie. Ole Golly is astonished, but stands up for herself, saying she hopes they know by now that as long as Harriet is in Ole Golly's care no harm will come to her. While Harriet is shocked, she is also pleased to hear that Ole Golly believes she can take care of herself. Controversy. She is whip smart, casually cruel, constantly shouting weird nonsense, frustrating, brilliant and always, always surprising. Ole Golly is the bridge between Harriet and the rest of the adult world. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1964 publication of Harriet the Spy, a special hardcover edition was published in 2014, with a number of special additions. Whether hanging out in a dark alley listening to the Dei Santi family, clinging to a window ledge to spy on Mr. Withers and his cats, or wedging herself tightly into a dumbwaiter to hear Mrs. Plumber’s theatrical phone calls, Harriet will wait for hours to hear something she can write down in her precious notebook. This leads her parents to confiscate her notebook, but this only serves to make Harriet even more depressed. She has lost her childhood nurse, and is now forced to grow up, because she does not have Ole Golly to look after her. Copyright © 1999 - 2020 GradeSaver LLC. Suddenly a man with a black mustache wearing a delivery jacket comes up to the house and rings for Ole Golly. Harriet the Spy is one of the most three-dimensional characters in children’s literature of the 60s. EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what I am trying to teach my girls! However, he was miserable. The book’s discussion of friendship begins with the nanny. First surprise was that the book was 400 pages. I used to really, really love this book. Movies. She hated math with every bone in her body.
